James AOL Transcript
AOL Host: Hey, Jessica Stover here with James Van Der Beek, star of "Dawson's Creek" and upcoming film "The Rules ofAttraction." Great have you here.
James Van Der Beek: Great to be here.
AOL Host: The first question, from massey, who says what is the new movie about, and what is your role?
James Van Der Beek: All right, the knew of movie, it's a really honest, really raw college movie. This is a movie that doesn't leave anything out. So to speak. Let's see, I play Sean Bateman, who according to the lore is the younger brother of Patrick Bateman, the American psycho. Shawn isn't homicidal yet. He's not killing anybody. Yet. But imagine that he grew up in that household, and he's in college, and he feels like he's his fate is to end up just like his brother, and he doesn't want to. Really, what he's trying to do is find love. He's just a real predator and a real primal guy, and he doesn't really go about it in the right way.
AOL Host: This is definitely different from what you've done in the past, rated r. If you're under 17, grab a parent.
James Van Der Beek: Right. Or somebody in line that looks like they could be your parent. I didn't say to do that.
AOL Host: What made you choose that role?
James Van Der Beek: It was completely different than anything I'd ever gotten into. I mean, it's the complete opposite of Dawson. Actually, it was -- we shot it while I was doing "Dawson's Creek," so I had to build him as the opposite of Dawson But he just is such a complex character. First, it was the best script I've ever read. I read a lot of scripts, and this is the best I'd ever seen. It hadn't been made into a movie yet. So that was really exciting. That was Roger Avery, the director, who he wrote and directed "killing Zo" and co-wrote "pulp fiction." He's the coolest, so smart, kind of a mad genius. I thought he could absolutely pull off what he was talking about. It seemed like the most exciting project. I knew I had to be part of it.
AOL Host: That's amazing. I can't wait to see it Friday.
James Van Der Beek: Thank you.
AOL Host: Our next question from teenalt 34 who says, oh, my God, I can't believe what happened on Dawson. Like the first time you saw the script, were you shocked? I think they're talking about the Dawson-Joey --
James Van Der Beek: Yeah, Dawson and Joey getting it on. They kind of told me that we might probably be doing it in the first episode. And --
AOL Host: Doing it?
James Van Der Beek: Doing it. That's right. They didn't use those exact words. They might do it in episode one, break up in episode two. I was on a plane, actuallying going down to Wilmington, so I wasn't too shocked.
AOL Host: You knew it was coming. Had to be sooner or later, right?
James Van Der Beek: It's been a long time coming.
AOL Host: I thought they'd wait to the end of the season.
James Van Der Beek: Phew. I think we were running out of reasons for them not to be together. We've been strippinging it along for a while.
AOL Host: I can't wait to see how this ends up. Next question -- do you hang out with the cast and crew off the set?
James Van Der Beek: Yeah, all the time. There's really no one else to hang out. With
AOL Host: In Wilmington.
James Van Der Beek: Yeah, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Absolutely. The people we hang out most with are the people we're not working with at the time, yeah, because we miss them, because they're not there.
AOL Host: Who is your closest friend in the cast?
James Van Der Beek: Depends on the day, really. I haven't worked with Michelle very much at all. She and I hang out very much the most.
AOL Host: You aren't sick of her yet?
James Van Der Beek: No. Two days I've seen her at work.
AOL Host: You would think you'd see each other at work every day.
James Van Der Beek: Yeah.
AOL Host: Yes333 says, where was your new Movie shot, and how long did it take you to film it? >>Shot it in --
James Van Der Beek: Shot it in California. We were doing "Dawson" at the same time.
AOL Host: Were you back and forth then.
James Van Der Beek: Yeah. They would have to find something to shoot without me on Friday. I was either working on flying seven days a week for about six weeks. It was crazy. But we got to film in California through this thing called the film California First Initiative. It would have been cheaper to shoot in California, but we wanted to shoot here. We ended up shooting in anabandoned silo, some of the interiors. If you shoot on location, you get permit fees. This is part of Roger, the genius, he knew how to cut corners like that. All those interior dorm scenes are in an old asylum in Downey, yeah.
AOL Host: That's interesting. A good one from beachdame37 -- how did you start acting?
James Van Der Beek: Wow, that's a good one. God, I guess I've always been kind of doing it. The first real, like, play I ever did, I was 13, I did a community production of " Grease," but I had done stuff on stage before. My mom was a gymnastics teacher, but at 5, I don't remember, but was on stage doing like a cartwheel or something. Something, anything, -- it was foreign to me.
AOL Host: I heard a story about a football injury.
James Van Der Beek: Yeah, that's why I did "grease" when I was 13, I had gotten a concussion in gym class and the doctor would not allow me to play tackle football that year. I loved it.
AOL Host: Here's one from kris 10 xl -- what is your favorite part of working on "Dawson's Creek"?
James Van Der Beek: Favorite part? Hmm. Favorite part? I would say the crew. We've been working with the same crew since pretty much -- pretty much the same people who were on the pilot still work on the show now. There has been a little bit of turnover, but it's just a really tightknit family. It's at the point now where we can communicate with the gripsand electrics with like a look or eyebrow raise. We know each other so well. Not much needs to be said. That's actually what I'm going to miss, when all this is over, these people that have watched me grow up. They met us when we were just like four dumb kids who just got this pilot, going "oh, OK."
AOL Host: Now it's amazing.
James Van Der Beek: Yeah, that he watched it all blow up.
AOL Host: I remember watching the first episode, I was drawn to it, like everyone else in the world.
James Van Der Beek: Cool.
AOL Host: Speaking of "Dawson's Creek," I can't wait to see what's going to happen tomorrow. Why don't we watch a clip.
James Van Der Beek: All right. I guarantee I'm not in it.
AOL Host: Would you just die if your professor read a love letter outloud in front of your class?
James Van Der Beek: Yeah. That makes for high drama.
AOL Host: I can see for some of my college professors doing that.
James Van Der Beek: Especially with e-mail. You write something, you never know when it's going to come back. You have to be guarded.
AOL Host: Definitely. Especially that teacher. He's so mean. I'm like, be nice to Joey. One from dreamy6480, which one of your directors or actors would you love love to play works or work with?
James Van Der Beek: I love the way she -- I love that she used the word "play." If it is a she. That's a good word. That's what it is. Someone I'd love to work with? Probably -- everyone's got a list. I think the top of mine is probably Paul newman.
AOL Host: Why is that?
James Van Der Beek: He's been around forever. He's so good. He's so good. He's one of those people who you want to work with just so you can eat lunch with him during the day. You just like park your lunch tray next to theirs, then you ask questions and listen the whole time. It's great. Like taking a master's class. You really can't beat it.
AOL Host: Wow. I bet you learn a lot from that. Here's one from marman-t-boy -- before you read the script for "The Rules of Attraction," were you familiar with Allison's work, and what you did think of it?
James Van Der Beek: I was familiar with "American psycho" the book. I don't know if I was ready for it. I've always thought of the author as somebody I'm glad is out there. Someone who has that point of view and someone who decon structs society like that. Whether or not you agree with him, he's one of those people I'm really glad is out there.
AOL Host: It's always interesting to think about things differently.
James Van Der Beek: Absolutely. He really does, and he's pretty fearless as writer. I respect that.
AOL Host: Here's one from under her 72, do you ever sit back and think, man, this is awesome?
James Van Der Beek: All the time. All the time. Yeah. It's surreal. No, I mean, please, I'm sitting here talking to how many people right now?
AOL Host: A lot.
James Van Der Beek: It's crazy. And yeah, I have a lot to appreciate, certainly.
AOL Host: I can imagine. Here's one from Jesse 9136, are you dating anyone at this point? This is the one all the girls are sending in. I'll bet there are 50,000.
James Van Der Beek: Really? No, I'm engaged to someone at this point.
AOL Host: Off the market.
James Van Der Beek: I don't date too much now.
AOL Host: A little beyond dating.
James Van Der Beek: Yeah. I've graduated to the next step.
AOL Host: Definitely. Congratulations.
James Van Der Beek: Thank you.
AOL Host: Here's one from hollow Anne, as a fan who has waited for years for them to get together, Joey and Dawson's love scene was quite tame, almost reserved. Were you happy with it?
James Van Der Beek: I didn't see it, actually. It was kind of tame in the script. It was just Dawson gives her the snow globe and kisses, and they fall onto the bed. That was kind of it.
AOL Host: Yeah, the snow globe.
James Van Der Beek: I didn't know, would it be in the rain, on the grass? You know. But I guess it was kind of -- a couple people mentioned that, actually, maybe because it's 8:00.You can't get too much more --
AOL Host: Too racy?
James Van Der Beek: Too down and dirty. We used to be real racy. We used to air at 9:00 the first season. Now 8:00.
AOL Host: Jen had her exploits back then. I remember.
James Van Der Beek: That's right.
AOL Host: Sammy panda asks, what kind of music do you listen to?
James Van Der Beek: Everything, from Dr. Dre to Dave matthews, to red hot chili perps. I just -- red hot chili peppers. I got eclectic taste.
AOL Host: You're all over theplace?
James Van Der Beek: Yeah. I have a C.D. I'll love, then a couple months ago it was this Who C.D.
AOL Host: Do you ever play one song out over and over --
James Van Der Beek: Then get so sick of it? Yeah.
AOL Host: That's what I do, one song for a week, then I move on. Chris 10 xo -- do you real to -- do you relate to any of the issues on the show?
James Van Der Beek: Yeah. I mean, especially right now, it's all about unrequited love. I think everybody relates to that.
AOL Host: But you're engaged.
James Van Der Beek: Yeah, but you have to go through unrequited love to appreciate the real thing when it comes along. You still remember all that stuff.
AOL Host: Yeah. Cory's place asks, what do you think will happen with Dawson and Joey? Are they going to get together in the end?
James Van Der Beek: I don't know. It's not up to me. We basically get the scripts about a week before we shoot.
AOL Host: What do you think will happen?
James Van Der Beek: I would think they, would get together at some point. I think the writers, if they exploit it, I don't know.
AOL Host: Anything could happen?
James Van Der Beek: Anything could happen. We try to ask, we could kind of think answers --
AOL Host: They won't tell you?
James Van Der Beek: No, they don't let us know too far in advance. I don't know. Keep writing the writers, they do read stuff on-line.
AOL Host: Really? We can write and petition for Joey and Dawson to get together?
James Van Der Beek: Yeah. I know they read that stuff.
AOL Host: Another one from Cory -- is Jessica Biel in your new movie "The Rules of Attraction"?
James Van Der Beek: Yeah. She's so cool, too. I had met Jesse before, just briefly. I didn't know her very well, but she blew me away on the set. She did. She's so brave. I mean, what she had to do in scene, was kind of weird, kind of jarring, but she just was so cool about it. I was so impressed with her.
AOL Host: Really? There was a lot of W B actors.
James Van Der Beek: The WB employs a lot of young actors. It makes sense a lot of them would have gone through it at some point in time. Yes, Jesse, Jessica Biel is in the movie, and she's very funny.
AOL Host: She looks great in the trailers.
James Van Der Beek: Yeah. She always looks great.
AOL Host: She's got the hair commercials now.
James Van Der Beek: That's right, she does.
AOL Host: Liz 62489 -- where were you born?
James Van Der Beek: In a small town called batterbury, Connecticut. Same -- waterbury, Connecticut. Same hospital as Dylan McDermott.
AOL Host: Really? Were there any creative stunts in the new movie? If so, do you know your standin?
James Van Der Beek: That would have been my stunt double who did stunts. But I did the stunts in the movie.
AOL Host: Anything crazy?
James Van Der Beek: There was a one scene where I got to run around the house and jump over the hood of the car? That was fun.
AOL Host: You did that?
James Van Der Beek: Yeah. I did it a lot. It was fun.
AOL Host: How many takes?
James Van Der Beek: It was a pretty complicated shot, because the camera was moving, then the car would start and pull out. At least 10 times.
AOL Host: Now you're a pull, and you can pull it out anytime?
James Van Der Beek: That's right.
AOL Host: Like here comes James Van Der Beek.
AOL Host: Right. All the talking we do in --
James Van Der Beek: All the talking we do in "Dawson's Creek," then this was so physical.
AOL Host: Dawson heightens your vocabulary.
AOL Host: Hopefully.
AOL Host: Speaking about the movie, let's watch another clip.
James Van Der Beek: OK.
AOL Host: That's great. You're so evil there, though.
James Van Der Beek: Yeah. Yeah, he's pretty evil. That's the point where he's pretty much lost all hope.
AOL Host: You nail it. It's amazing, the difference between Dawson and watching you in "The Rules of Attraction."
James Van Der Beek: Thank you.
AOL Host: Here's a question we get a lot, always fun, eaglechick 2142 -- I would like to know what your most embarrassing moment is. You have to have been asked this before.
James Van Der Beek: I'm trying to think of something.
AOL Host: Maybe you have a new one.
James Van Der Beek: Do I have a new one?
AOL Host: Was there anything from the movie set?
James Van Der Beek: I do some pretty crazy stuff in the movie, but a lot of it was all that embarrassing because you're there, kind of in character, just doing it. What was embarrassing? I did a talk show this morning where I saw an old clip of myself, my first television interview, with like season one, Dawson's hair blown out, really long. That was pretty embarrassing, looking at myself back then. I was just a scared kid, my first TV show. I was pretty embarrassed. As far as embarrassing moments -- maybe I blocked them all out, I don't know. I'm sure there are a ton in middle school, high school. But Lord knows, I wasn't the coolest kid on the block.
AOL Host: That's the most embarrassing time, middle-high school.
James Van Der Beek: It's such a hard time. Yeah. I was such a geek, too.
AOL Host: Were you?
James Van Der Beek: Yeah.
AOL Host: Everyone says that. I'm like, everyone must have been a geek.
James Van Der Beek: Really?
AOL Host: Oh, yeah.
James Van Der Beek: I can't think of anything better, though.
AOL Host: You'll think of something later, I'm sure.
James Van Der Beek: If I do, I'll chime in.
AOL Host: Let me know. Here's a great screen name, anikinskywalk who scass, who's a better kisser, Katie Holmes or Michelle Williams? Can I take a guess?
James Van Der Beek: I guarantee you'll be wrong, but OK.
AOL Host: I'm going to guess Katie.
James Van Der Beek: They're both pretty good.
AOL Host: You didn't pick one.
James Van Der Beek: I can't.The truth is, they're both really, really good kissers. They're both very different, but very good.
AOL Host: Kissing technique.
James Van Der Beek: It's very easy to kiss both of them on screen. Even though they're both like my sisters, which a -- which is a little weird --
AOL Host: That was a very nice answer.
James Van Der Beek: It's the truth, really.
AOL Host: Here's one from sweet Lynn 075, did you like having jack Osbourne on the show, and do you watch "the Osbournes"?
James Van Der Beek: I love the show. I met him on the set. He came by, I introduced myself. He's really sweet. From what I heard, he didn't swear that much until he was asked to in the script.
AOL Host: There was like five beeps in the script.
James Van Der Beek: From what the crew said, he didn't swear that much.
AOL Host: Like he was paid to swear.
James Van Der Beek: Yeah, really. He's not giving it to you for free.
AOL Host: Next question -- what would you be doing if you weren't acting?
James Van Der Beek: I would probably be an English teacher.
AOL Host: That's what I thought of doing.
James Van Der Beek: Really?
AOL Host: Yeah. Why?
James Van Der Beek: I had a really great English teacher growing up, I really liked, who kind of changed my life.
AOL Host: English kind of lends itself to theater.
James Van Der Beek: It does.It was an outlet for any creative energy I had at the time, too. That's what I was studying in college, too, English, sociology.
AOL Host: Do you do a lot of writing?
James Van Der Beek: Yeah.
AOL Host: Are we going to see ascreen play in some years?
James Van Der Beek: Maybe.
AOL Host: Directing?
James Van Der Beek: Notdirected by for quite a while. Though I am directing an episode of "Dawson's Creek" later in the season.
AOL Host: Congratulations.
James Van Der Beek: Thank you.
AOL Host: You're on your way. We'll see the Van Der Beek productions thing anxiously awaiting.
James Van Der Beek: You know who to blame, though, if you have a problem.
AOL Host: I'll be there. Next question -- when does "TheRules of Attraction" come to theaters?
James Van Der Beek: October 11. October 11.
AOL Host: This Friday?
James Van Der Beek: Yeah. You may have to search it out. It's lion's gate. It will be out in about 1,100 screens, which is big for them. But you might have to scour your papers a bit.
AOL Host: Well worth it, I'm sure.
James Van Der Beek: Hopefully I love how optimistic you are.
AOL Host: Next question -- who had a question earlier, if you got a chance, would you star in "the sopranos"?
James Van Der Beek: I love that show. I don't know how I'd fit in or where.
AOL Host: What kind of character would you be? You could off somebody.
James Van Der Beek: I don't know that I could fit in as part of the family. I'd be the outsider, the guy meadow brings home, who her dad hates.
AOL Host: Then you get shot.
James Van Der Beek: Right.
AOL Host: Charm 1282 -- what's it like working with Katie Holmes?
James Van Der Beek: It is absolute hell.
AOL Host: Hate it.
James Van Der Beek: It's great. I've known Kate for like six years. It's like it's very easy, very easy, like second nature at this point.
AOL Host: You guys are family.
James Van Der Beek: And we knoweach other so well, too.
AOL Host: You both are doing so well, in movies and TV.
James Van Der Beek: We're both pretty busy. Her movie is coming out the week after mine, I think.
AOL Host: The creek-off.
James Van Der Beek: Buy a ticket to "The Rules of Attraction," then see "abandon." I'm kidding.
AOL Host: She's coming here.
James Van Der Beek: Is she? Cool.
AOL Host: Reader W.I. says, hi, James, I want to know what makes you laugh. And what are your most ticklish spots?
James Van Der Beek: I don't know. What makes me laugh? Like anything that's really true, really silly, makes m laugh. I think that's why I like rume ruhle. There are so -- that's why I like "The Rules of Attraction. There are so many things in interest that really happen. When I was watching "The Rules of Attraction" for the first time, Marilyn manson was in the row ahead of me, and he and I laughed at the same places.
AOL Host: Did you talk to him?
James Van Der Beek: Yeah. He's really cool. He really liked the movie. He turned around, he goes, "whoa, that was dark."
James Van Der Beek: He's like "go, James."
James Van Der Beek: Like, "wow, Marilyn manson thought it was dark." He's cool. Very cool guy.
AOL Host: Arrowhead q -- what's your favorite inspectors and why? Football?
James Van Der Beek: Football and baseball. I grew up playing both of them.
AOL Host: "Varsity Blues"? You showed off your football skills.
James Van Der Beek: Thank you.
AOL Host: I love that. I need to rent that again. That "The Rules of Attraction," it will be fabulous. Here's one from emf-11-soccer -- how did you get started with acting? We talked about this before. This is related to football.
James Van Der Beek: True. True. That's how I started. But professionally, I startedwhen I was about 15. And I for some reason thought Icould do it. I told my mom, I'm like, "I think I can do this." She was cool, she said, "all right, we'll give you the similar." That summer she took me to New York, I got an agent.Actually, I had a manager at that point, and the manager stopped managing. Then I auditioned for a year and a half before I got anything. I went to Connecticut, like a three-hour trip basicly, and I didn't get anything for a year and a half. Then I got theater in New York, then a film or two, I went to college and got "Dawson'sCreek" out of college.
AOL Host: Perseverance pays off.
James Van Der Beek: Yeah.
AOL Host: Sacrifice.
James Van Der Beek: It's not easy. Good work if you can get it, but getting it is a whole other story, yeah.
AOL Host: Next question -- where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?
James Van Der Beek: Hopefully, I'm still working. I'd love to still be doing this, I think.
AOL Host: The Van Der Beek package.
James Van Der Beek: Yeah, hopefully still acting, hopefully working in film.
AOL Host: Married by then. A long engagement?
James Van Der Beek: No, we've got a date already.
AOL Host: I won't press you for details.
James Van Der Beek: You won't get them.
AOL Host: I won't try. Kitty 535451 wants to know what the craziest thing a girl has done to get to you, or any fan for that matter.
James Van Der Beek: The craziest was this woman following me out of the local Harris Teeter in Wilmington. I signed an autograph for a kid , because she asked me in the store, I did she followed me out afterwards to my carer. My car was really dirty, because I hadn't washed it. I never wash my car. She wiped the dirt off my car with her hand and said, "thank you. I will take this home to my children."
AOL Host: Do what with it?
James Van Der Beek: That's what I was wondering.
AOL Host: You're good about signing autographs.
James Van Der Beek: I try to be.
AOL Host: Some people aren't. I heard from your fans. On the web sites, the fans talk about seeing you guys in Wilmington, how to become extras. You haven't seen this?
James Van Der Beek: I haven't.
AOL Host: Check it out. There's tips how to be extras.
James Van Der Beek: Being an extra is a tough job. It's boring. They teach you like cattle.
AOL Host: Those are true fans, though.
James Van Der Beek: They are. God bless them.
AOL Host: Next question -- I named my dogs Dawson and Joey. Do you have any pets, and what are their names?
James Van Der Beek: I don't have pets. I live on two coasts at the same time. It's not fair I'd love to have like a dog. But it wouldn't be fair to the poor dog.
AOL Host: Takes a lot of time.
James Van Der Beek: It does. I can't be flying a dog back and forth.
AOL Host: Yeah. That would be hard.
James Van Der Beek: It would. Wouldn't be fair to him.
AOL Host: What do you think about her naming her dogs Dawson and Joey?
James Van Der Beek: It's hysterical. Kim Williamson named her dog Dawson. Just before the pilot got picked up.
AOL Host: Next question -- do you have any other movies planned besides"The Rules of Attraction"? Doip not just yet. --
James Van Der Beek: Not just yet I'm doing "Dawson" till April. I've got a little time to figure it out.
AOL Host: We're looking forward to it. That's all the time we have.
James Van Der Beek: Is it really?
AOL Host: Yeah.Went so fast Thanks to you for tuning in. And for the awesome questions for James Don't forget, "Dawson's Creek" tomorrow, 8:00 p.m. eastern time, and "The Rules of Attraction" this Friday, October 11 Thank you so much. It was fun.
James Van Der Beek: Thank you. I had a great time.
AOL Host: See you next time.
